DVLA Tax Disc Fine
Hi everyone,

Much to my surprise I received a letter through the post today saying I had a £200 fine for having no tax on my vehicle.

To my surprise, given that my current tax expires in June 2015.

Basically I can only think of two options

1. My car for some reason has not been updated on the new system as having tax.

2. It was a very sunny day and this somehow detracted from the (presumably automated) camera that took the photograph.

Anyone else experienced this?

Can I invoice them for wasting my time?

Cheers

Just pay your fine and tax your car in future.

We wouldn't have mate - I bought it in August of last year, before the 1st of October.

When you bought the car off him you would have had to tax it as road tax no longer transfers with the vehicle!!

Re: DVLA Tax Disc Fine
So bottomed out the problem. No fine, just have to write them a letter.

When the old man bought it, it was a company car, the company for some reason declared it SORN.

He had it for a couple of weeks then I bought it off him, but not knowing it was SORN didn't declare it back on the road.

Stupidly, I would have thought the change in owner via the log book would have changed the SORN status anyway!?

From 1 October 2014, the paper tax disc will no longer need to be displayed on a vehicle windscreen. If you have a tax disc with any months left to run after this date, then it can be removed from the vehicle windscreen and destroyed.

Re: DVLA Tax Disc Fine
Since October the DVLA has not sent out tax discs. I've been told that any disc sent before then has to be displayed until the expiry date.

Interesting, who told you that?

I was under the impresion you didn't need to show one at all after Oct 1.

I had a new windscreen put on mine in Decmebr and I never bothered to put the May 15 tax disc back. It is shown as taxed on the DVLA site.

Think if people got done now there'd be legal challenges everywhere after it's been widely said you do not need to show a tax disc now.

Re: DVLA Tax Disc Fine
I've always thought it was as Comma says, you have to display a disc until its expiry but it won't be replaced. But I bet loads will have interpreted the change as meaning if the disc drops off, they don't need to put it back. Silly to pursue people if a camera shows no disc but a check shows it's taxed. Their resources are limited, go after the ones with neither.

Had some dealings with DVLA over a non-tax issue and the people who deal with queries haven't been the sharpest tools in the box.

If you've definitely got a tax disc, I'd ignore it.

Let them keep writing, take any action they can without you responding then one day show them the disc.

Cheers Ray Winstone.

It isn't listed as taxed on there. Know of any good reasons why??

My understanding is that you don't have to display a disc either

Something g must have gone wrong at DVLA for the OP it's all done on number plate recognition so they've clocked he's driving around and cross checked it back.

Big brother is alive and well!

Re: DVLA Tax Disc Fine

First off ring DVLA and confirm that their records show that you have up to date tax. Once you've done that you can write back telling them to poke it. Have the serial number of your tax disc handy to question it if they say no.

Since October it's no longer necessary to display a tax disc, it all comes down to DVLA records.
